Once again, TGM crashed head-long through some development walls, including a decisive forum crash, but with a rejuvenated template, we are back on schedule. By Tuesday or Wednesday, we'll have the basic "room board" posted to the template home; in addition, our goal is to post the first of several practice mazes on our Bed Page by Friday. As always, all suggestions are welcome (see FAQ page for details).

After several steps forward, TGM hit a few snags today, including some cross-platform layout issues. We seem to manage an even display experience for both Firefox and Internet Explorer users; but our Mac-Safari tester complained of post-test extending too far to the right.

After three months of planning, we're nearly ready to begin posting the mazes. This week we set up a bare-bones site map that should satisfactorily hold the early stages of the maze.

Question 1. What is the Greatest Maze on the Web?
Answer: This is.

Question 2. What makes the Greatest Maze on the Web different from other web-based puzzles?
Answer: The Greatest Maze on the Web is a story-based puzzle. Understanding what "story-based" means is a part of the task appointed to the player who wishes to successfully complete the maze. Basically there are several layers embedded into the plot of a single story, and the path from one end of the maze to the other can only be completed by surfacing on the top of layer of the story.

Question 3. Where do I go to begin the Maze?
Answer: Players who are entering the Labyrinth for the first time need to begin by visiting our Bed Page. Several "wake-up calls" are posted on the Bed Page. After the successful completion of these wake-ups, players shouldn't need to ask where the Maze begins.

Question 4. What do I need to successfully solve the Greatest Maze?
Answer: You will receive your basic training by completing the tasks provided for you on the Bed Page. Nevertheless, before you begin the Maze, TGM would like to use this opportunity to discuss some of tools you will need to keep handy in your bag of tricks.

If you have your own computer and an adequate internet connection, you won't need to purchase any tools whatsoever to solve the Maze. However, you will need to perform certain tasks that may require you to familiarize yourself with basic free ware available on the web. (You may already have everything you need, but please consult the following list before assuming that a certain room in the labyrinth cannot be solved). Make sure you can perform the following tasks before you begin:

- Search (Google or other) the Web
- View Page Source
- View and Edit Images and Photos
- View Exif Information

This list is subject to change, and we suggest you return to this list on occasion, to make sure you aren't needlessly stuck in a Maze room.

If you are reading these FAQ, then your computer is capable of browsing the internet. This also means that you are most likely able to View Page Source. If you are not sure how to do this, do not be afraid (not yet, anyway): remember, the Bed Page should make certain things more clear as you proceed through the wake-ups.

Your computer may already have one, but you will need some sort of Photo Editing software. We're sure Adobe Photoshop would work brilliantly, but who can afford it? The Greatest Maze on the Web was designed using free software only. There are many impressive options for you to choose from, but we recommend these free alternatives:

- Paint.NET, OR
- GIMP

You won't need both. Paint.NET is much easier to learn, and to use, and for the purposes of playing the Maze, we highly recommend it.

Occasionally, you will also need to View Exif information about images you find in the Maze. Don't worry if you don't know what Exif information is right now (again, this is the sort of thing you'll learn at the Bed Page). What you do need right now is the capability to view Exif information whether you know what it is or not.

There are probably many ways to do this (we suspect fancy-pants Adobe Photoshop users can view Exif info without batting an eye), but here's one free way to do it:

- Get the Free Firefox Browser (we have a Firefox button available on every page)
- Then you will need the Exif Viewer add-on, and
- the FxIF add-on.

Introduction to the Greatest Maze on the Web

I am awake. That much is certain . . . at any rate, my wakefulness seems certain to me, now. I can remember things, things that must have happened to me a long time ago, but now those things do not seem so real to me. My wakefulness is like a moment of nostalgia: I am linked to times and places that no longer exist; the act of remembering is real, but the event I remember seems more like a story that I've only learned by repeating it over and over, and over again.

How old am I? What am I doing here? What is my purpose? Is this road leading away from my bed a path of my own choosing, or has someone else designed my destiny while I was asleep?

Who am I? I have answered that question many times, and each time the answer I give myself changes. Is there no end to such questioning?

Maybe I would serve myself better by going back to sleep. With sleep, at least, I am not in charge of waking: my body arranges for me to wake when my dreaming becomes less than profitable. When I am awake, however, I am in charge. It is my responsibility to know when my mind is stuck in unprofitable neighborhoods, driving on blind highways, paddling toward the falls on the river, plunging toward my death.

Well. For better or for worse, I am awake. Or so it seems.
